NAT (Network Address Translation)
The system used by routers that connect the local network to the Internet. Replaces the data packets transmitted IP addresses to computers on the local network to real external IP address. May also be changing the port number. The system stores the table conversions between internal and external addresses/ports, thanks to which you can connect multiple outbound connections to a single shared IP address.
The main disadvantage of NAT is that random site on the Internet cannot directly connect to a computer within the local network. Another problem is that some applications embed IP addresses in the information part of the package. Such applications (ICQ, IRC, streaming RealVideo delivery programme and others) may not fully function through NAT. NAT, on the other hand, the system hides the internal network structure that gives some advantage in terms of security.
