SSL - Secure Connections
Designed to ensure the confidentiality of exchanges between the two application processes a client and a server. Developed by Netscape Communications. Provides the ability to authenticate the server and client. SSL can use application-layer protocols such as HTTP, FTP, TELNET, and other, all data is sent encrypted to guarantee confidentiality.
SSL is an encryption algorithm with a public key. To confirm the authenticity of the data source applies SSL certificate that is signed and certified by a third-party certification, which guarantees its authenticity. To install an SSL certificate requires a dedicated IP address.
To access Web pages that are protected by SSL, the URL instead of the usual http is https prefix, indicating that you will use an SSL connection through TCP port 443.
