Family of network protocols that defines the functioning of the Internet. Originally developed by DARPA (Defense Advance Research Projects Agency) for networking computers, various departments of the Ministry of defence of the United States. In addition to the Internet, these protocols are now also widely used in various private and commercial networks.

The TCP/IP stack is based on a multi-layered interaction protocols.

Application layer protocols are usually divided into two categories: user, providing services directly to user-HTTP, FTP, TELNET, etc. and protocols support (Office), providing a general-purpose system features-DNS protocol SNMP network management and routing protocols. They all use the protocols of the transport layer-TCP and UDP to transport data between hosts. Transport protocols in turn use network Internet Protocol (IP) as the underlying transport mechanism.
